It was founded in Nicaragua by the Society of Jesus in 1960, as a non-profit, autonomous, educational institution of public service and Christian inspiration. It is a member of the Association of Latin American Universities Entrusted to the Society of Jesus (AUSJAL). UCA incorporates an international and intercultural dimension into its curriculum, research and social outreach activities, working in networks and establishing partnerships with a number of institutions in Latin America, the United States and Europe, which contribute to raising academic quality. The University s research strategies prioritize issues sensitive to national and global contexts, integrating its schools, institutes and centers around the following topics: Sustainable Territorial Development; State, Democracy and Citizen Participation; Climate change and Environmental Management; Citizen Education and Culture; Population, Migration and Labor Markets. It is comprised of four Schools offering 19 undergraduate majors: School of Science, Technology and Environment: Architecture Graphic Design Civil Engineering Environmental Engineering Networks and Telecommunications Engineering Information Systems Engineering Industrial Engineering School of Economics and Business Studies: Business Administration Public Accounting and Auditing Applied Economics Finance Marketing School of Law: Law School of Humanities and Communication: Communication Teaching English as a Foreign Language Humanities and Philosophy Psychology Sociology Social Work and Development Management Postgraduate programs 2 PhD 15 Masters More information in Office of Academic Cooperation and Internationalization The Office of Academic Cooperation and Internationalization is in charge of the promotion, coordination, follow up and accompaniment of the internationalization processes and initiatives of the University, including the academic exchange program and other international programs. Student Academic Exchange Program The Student Academic Exchange Program is directed towards international students from partner universities at the undergraduate and graduate level who wish to study up to one academic year at Universidad Centroamericana (UCA). Under this program, the student pays academic fees at the home university. Independent Students Program The Independent Students Program is directed towards international students from non-partner universities at the undergraduate and graduate level who wish to study up to one academic year at Universidad Centroamericana (UCA). The student applying under this Program pays tuition and fees to UCA. International programs Research stays, internships, practicums and social outreach UCA provides the opportunity for faculty members and students to do research stays and internships at its various institutes and research and outreach centers: The Research and Development Institute Nitlapan The Institute for Training, Research and Environmental Development (CIDEA) The Institute of History of Nicaragua and Central America (IHNCA) The Institute of Education (IDEUCA) The Center for Socio-cultural Analysis (CASC) The Molecular Biology Center (CBM) The Biological Station Juan Roberto Zarruk More information in Internships and practicums UCA curriculum requires students to participate in internships and practicums at public and private institutions in Nicaragua. International students can take advantage of these partnerships during their stay to have their own internship experience. Social Outreach Visiting students participating in the exchange program and special short-term programs have the option to participate in Social Service activities and in the Social Volunteering Program at the University Pastoral Center. The possibilities for volunteering can be extended to other projects of the Society of Jesus in Nicaragua through UCA s coordination. Public Health Issues in Nicaragua A 10-day experience that provides international students with the opportunity of working with an interdisciplinary team made up of students and faculty from Universidad Centroamericana and members of Nicaraguan communities on public health issues. Teams work on developing, implementing, and evaluating sustainable solutions for community-identified health issues. Students are housed in University affiliated housing, all meals and local transportation are provided and a variety of cultural experiences are included. International programs International programs Summer Intensive Language and Culture Program The summer intensive language and culture program offers students the opportunity to study language intensively through class work, lecture, seminars, field excursions, and cultural events. The study of Latin American culture is integrated into language instruction and incorporates historical, anthropological, political and economic dimensions. The program is taught completely in Spanish with homestay family lodging to maximize opportunities for oral fluency. It has a duration of six weeks during which students take three courses: Mesoamerican Culture and Identity, Latin American Literature and History of Nicaragua. Ecosystems of Nicaragua: Environmental and Economic Challenges A three week course, taught in English, which studies the unique and interesting challenges in conservation and environmental and economic sustainability faced by Nicaragua. The students participating in the course travel to different ecosystems where they are able to examine issues related to environmental resource management and its impact on communities, as well as exploring community based solutions to sustainable resource management. The course topics are biodiversity conservation in dry and cloud forests, community based resource management and mangroves, people and shellfish. International programs Design your own program In collaboration with the different schools and academic departments of the University, special programs are developed in Spanish or English for foreign universities and institutions according to their academic, social service and cultural interests.
