Father Felix was assigned to St. Mark s for a period of two years. Over the years we have had a number of visiting student priests who come to Loyola Marymount University for their special 2 year program designed for International Priests. These priests are customarily assigned to a community for just two years as we have experienced in the past. Fr. Felix has extended his studies at Loyola Marymount for an additional period of time but will conclude his studies while assigned to a different parish. Father Felix has received a new assignment as an In-Residence student priest at St. Anthony Church in El Segundo. I wish to thank Fr. Felix for his two years of service to our community here in Venice. His gentle and quiet way has endeared him to many of you. I wish him well in his new assignment as well as his continued studies at Loyola Marymount. Our prayers go with him. This coming Thursday we will be celebrating our nation s Independence Day. Independence Day is a day in which we acknowledge our dependence upon one another and so offer prayers for our nation, our leaders and people that we may have the grace to pursue God s vision of peace and justice in our time. May we also repent of our misdeeds and give thanks for our achievements and blessings. May we celebrate God s purpose in all nations and give humble thanks for all those who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice on our behalf. And in the midst of geographical, cultural and ideological divisions, may God lead us to a common cause. And may all that we do, give glory to his holy name. On July 4th we will celebrate just our usual 8:00am Mass but with a patriotic theme, songs and special prayers for our nation. You are all welcome to begin our national holiday in prayer here at St. Mark s and then go off and continue to celebrate the day with family and friends. Happy Independence Day to one and all. I wish to welcome Father Francis Gonsalves, S.J., who will be with us during the months of July and August. Father Francis is coming from Dehli, India. Fr. Francis is the Principal of Vidyajyoti College Preparatory, a private Jesuit school in Dehli. After many years of teaching and administration he is beginning a well deserved sabbatical from his ministry in India. At the conclusion of his time with us he will be taking a few courses at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California. Fr. Francis has family in the area and so we are very fortunate that he will be assisting us during the summer while also spending time with his family. Let us all welcome Fr. Francis to St. Mark s. Our next Eucharistic Adoration Day will be this Monday, July 1st. From 8:30am to 8:30pm you are all invited to come and spend some time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. As we celebrate our nation s Independence Day later in the week it might be good to offer special prayers on this day for our nation as well as the cause of peace. I encourage as many of you as possible to consider coming and spending an hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. If you cannot spend an hour in prayer then a short visit would also be a grace filled moment. All are welcome. God bless you and your families. And may God Bless America. Y Dios bendiga a América. MARK SCHOOL The Archdiocesan Office of Victim Assistance Ministry periodically offers a support program for adult survivors of childhood abuse or neglect: A Faith-Based Response to Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse and Neglect. This recovery program uses a psychoeducational model. The model is educational in that it teaches how the trauma of childhood abuse and neglect typically impacts individuals. It is psycho-educational in that it provides tools for participants to safely examine and regulate their feelings, thought patterns and behavior. The entire program is presented in the context of prayer for God s healing and is not a psychotherapy group. The program follows a ten week format and is available in both English and Spanish. The dates, time and location of the next groups will be determined by interest.
